Smoothie Sunday: Carrot Smoothie Spiced with Ginger & Turmeric
Smoothie Sunday is a Tablecrafter series on creating flavorful blended beverages.
Slightly sweet with a hint of tartness, this carrot smoothie surprises tastebuds with a kick from ginger and turmeric. Carrots can do more for you than merely add crunch to your salad: its muted flavor also complements fruits well, which is why we'll pair today's recipe with one of our favorite, bananas.
As for our spices—most people can easily identify turmeric as a basic component of Indian cuisine. A cousin of ginger, it reputedly soothes a variety of ailments (from ulcers to arthritis to heart disease) and has consistently played a major role in the traditional herbal remedies of China, India, and Indonesia.
This rhizome has a warm, pungent, and bitter flavor. Its prominent hue adds the vibrant, recognizable yellow to soups, sauces, and curries—and now we're adding it to our smoothie.
